However, at no time is any liablity coverage provided by U.S. companies nor would it be recognized by Mexican authorities in the event of an accident. We recommend contacting your U.S. insurance provider to see if they do cover you in Mexico, and if so, buying at least a liability-only policy to cover you for any damages and medical expenses for third parties.

Misconception #2 - I will be doing most of my driving on the toll road, so I will be covered by the insurance provided when I pay my toll.

Reality - There is limited coverage provided when you are driving on the toll road, however, this coverage is only for damages or accidents that occur as a direct result of the condition of the toll road. There is no theft coverage provided and no coverage if you are at fault in an accident.

Misconception #3 - I need Mexican auto insurance for my trip Baja. Does it need to be purchased at least 48 hours in advance?

Reality - The insurance offered by Baja Bound can be purchased 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and coverage can start any hour on the hour with no lead time. For example, if it is 3:55, your policy can be purchased and begin 5 minutes later at 4:00.

Misconception #4 - If my car is stolen while in Mexico, my insurance policy will cover all of the personal belongings and contents of the car.

Reality - Personal belongings (such as clothes, cameras, laptops, sports equipment, camping gear, etc.) are actually covered by either your homeowners insurance policy or your renters insurance policy. Check with your domestic insurance provider to make sure that you have this coverage before you go to Mexico.

Misconception #5 - If I have an accident or need to file a claim, I should return to the U.S. and then report it.

Reality - Just the opposite is true. All claims must be reported while you are still in Mexico. The insurance company will send an adjuster to the scene if necessary, and a police report should be obtained as well. Failure to report a claim while you are still in Mexico will most likely result in denial of your claim.

For more Mexican insurance information please visit the Baja Bound website at www.bajabound.com

All content (c) 2006 Baja Bound Insurance Services, Inc.
